Summary: A vital link in Taiwan agriculture, the majority of mushroom production fulfills the domestic market and experiences drastic fluctuations between seasons. In recent years, the aging mushroom strains caused low vitality, global climate changes led to decreased production, and the lack of base work force placed pressure on the industry to evolve. However, in recent years, due to the high production cost and insufficient quality and production control, the industry has been remaining at a standstill. Automated upgrade of production facility and a comprehensive integration of systems are the keys to the revitalization of the mushroom industry. Intelligent agriculture will integrate a fully automated environment control and harvest procedure, an intelligent production technique that is the future trend of industry reinvention. Through the development of mushroom production facility, relevant machinery software and hardware, and the integration of energy conservation technology researches, the various phases of production, supply, and consumer demand can be assimilated in order to elevate the competitiveness of the mushroom industry in Taiwan.
Session 1: Crop Resilience to Abiotic and Biotic Stresses - Smart Plants for Modern Agriculture
Summary: Climate change is increasing frequency and severity of heat waves, drought and flooding events. Shifts in climate are likely to cause changes in insect pest and disease pressure. Agriculture must adapt to these challenges to satisfy the demand for food of a growing world population and maintain profitability of farming while conserving natural resources. Improved crop management technologies together with genetic enhancement of cultivars are required to ensure yield and product quality in harsh environments. Adjusting crop calendars, diversifying crop portfolios, and growing cultivars that carry resistance against major pests and diseases as well as tolerance to abiotic stresses will increase the resilience of agricultural production. Mobilizing biodiversity for crop improvement and more rapid and precise breeding technologies combining genomics and phenomics with classical breeding are generating better cultivars that yield well under variable environmental conditions in a timely manner. First products of these efforts such as flood-tolerant rice, a broad range of heat tolerant and disease resistant horticultural crops including tomato, pepper and broccoli, and drought tolerant field crops such as corn or soybean are available and broadly adopted, while more smart plants capable of tolerating harsh climates are about to reach farmers.

Summary: Seed coating technology developed since 1930’s. The benefits was limited in seed dressing and improve seed mobility via reducing friction in the beginning, and which is extended to strengthen the resistance towards environmental stresses through coating matrix adjustment. Moreover, adding certain active ingredients such as plant stimulants, nutrient elements, fungicides, insecticides and biologics may contribute to enhancing seed vigor, regulating seed germination and seedling growth, and improving the resistance of biotic or abiotic stresses. The customized coated seeds may ensure the seedling uniformity and decrease the consumption of pesticides and fertilize which all contribute to reduce the production cost and increase the market competitiveness. Summary: Subordinate to the Hsinchu Science Park Bureau under the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Yilan Science Park has focused its development on the knowledge economy (including telecommunications knowledge and services, digital content, and the research and development industry) since its establishment due to its unique humanities and geography. Session 2: Gut Matter, Got Better
Summary: Gut microbiota is one of the major research focus in animal nutrition globally, as it plays a critical role in nutrient utilization and health maintenance for livestock animals. These researches have shown that the gut microbiome interacts with the gut cell to provide health benefit to the host. Among all, Lactobacillus spp. represents a large portion of the animal microflora and significantly affects the microbiota. The Research team of SYNBIO TECH would like to share with you our latest finding about Lactobacillus and gut health in the seminar. Session 3: Organic acid application in drinking water and silage making
Ruminants require palatable and nutritious silage for best performance. The quality of silage depends on the ensiling process during which lactic acid bacteria multiply, leading to the formation of fermentation products which preserve the silage, maintaining its quality. Optimum fermentation conditions (moisture level, temperature, sugar and exclusion of air) as well as the prevention of reheating after opening the silo are key factors in successful silage making. Organic acid additives Lupro-Mix® NA and Lupro-Grain® help to achieve excellent silage even under the challenging conditions.
Clean drinking water should be provided to the animals to achieve the optimal genetic potential. Dirty water could harbour pathogens, i.e. Salmonella spp, Escherichia coli and Campylobacter, which in turn can negatively affect animal performance. Pathogens could be transferred to the final animal products and finally consumer safety. The best solution for safe drinking water is to prevent pathogen contamination and no withdrawal time. Lupro-Mix® NA inhibits or eliminates the pathogenic microorganisms by lowering water pH and disrupting their metabolism. This also prevents biofilm build up in water pipes and keeps pipes and drinking nipples clean. It is easy to apply, low-cost and with minimal corrosivity.

Summary: Due to some unknown parameters of water quality testing for aquacultures in the past, many diseases occurred to aquatic animals even with good reports of water quality. That is, the parameters for water quality testing were not the factors causing the diseases of aquatic animals. Many research institutes have devoted to investigating the indexes of water quality for years. Free radicals in the environment are one of the most critical indexes of water quality.
Free radicals, the unstable species excited by the environment, can cause damages in genes, cells and immune systems. The characteristics of damages caused by free radicals are typically degenerative, hereditary, and irreparable. Therefore, the following phenomena appear:
1. Aquatic animals die after the rain.
2. Spawns become feebler after the damage occurs.
3. Aquatic animals can have a relapse easily after injuries.
Free radicals in ponds come from air pollution and the overused substrate. That is the reason why the death of aquatic animals usually happens after the rain. In addition, new ponds usually have the higher yield.
Session 2: Development of Biotechnology Products Using Fish Scale Waste
Summary: Due to limited resources on the earth and depleted marine fisheries increasingly, raising aquaculture technology that could increase bio-resources, and make good use of aquatic wastes to enhance added value are urgent priority. Fish scales are rich in collagen and hydroxyapatite, if it is developed into a variety of biotechnology products, this will not only reduce environmental pollution, but also turn waste into high economic value products, increasing the income of fishermen, aquaculture farmers and food processing industries. The fish scale biotechnology products that we have developed are summarized in the following: 1. Collagen and its related products such as facial masks 2. Session 3: The current status and outlook for the commercially cultivated technology of mud crab Scylla serrata
Summary: The mud crab Scylla Serrata has high selling price and high demand in Global market. Taiwan is a consumptive country of mud crab, but most of the crabs are imported from foreign countries. Traditional polyculture couldn't provide enough amounts for domestic demand. Taiwan is in great need of hastening the development of new cultivated technology model to stabilize supplies and prices of crab. Fisheries Research Institute (FRI) develops a rearing model for mud crab. We have enhanced the technology of field ponds cultivation, and have established the model of Independent Boxes Farming. In the future, we will continue to develop and research by integrating the cultivated technology of mud crab with renewable energy, intelligence, and scale farming facilities to increase the output and international competitiveness of Taiwan.
